Dubai Airshow 2025 – Russian Navy to strengthen air defense of surface ships
The Russian Navy has begun to strengthen the air defense of its combat surface ships. This was done taking into account the experience of the Russian fleet in the Black Sea theater of combat operations
At Dubai Airshow 2025, Rosoboronexport is demonstrating some technical solutions aimed at strengthening ship air defense, especially for small-displacement ships. These solutions are related to the installation of naval versions of the Tor-M2KM and Pantsir-ME short-range anti-aircraft missile systems on ships.
As Vyacheslav Dzirkaln, deputy director general for foreign economic activity at the Almaz-Antey Air Defense Concern, told EDR ON-line, the idea of using the Tor-M2KM air defense system on warships was prompted by the experience of its use in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
“The idea of updating the modular version of the Tor was developed thanks to the special military operation. When it was necessary to protect small-displacement ships not equipped with an air defense system, the option of using the Tor at sea was proposed,” Dzirkaln said.
The Almaz-Antey Air Defense Concern stand displays a model of a Project 11356 Admiral Grigorovich-class frigate with a Tor-M2KM anti-aircraft missile module installed at the stern, connected to the ship’s power supply system.
As EDR On-Line learned at the exhibition, the Tor-M2KM system has been officially incorporated into the armament systems of Project 22800 (codename Karakurt) missile corvettes, Project 22160 patrol ships, and Project 775 large landing ships.
The Tor-M2KM air defense system is designed to provide cover for surface ships of these projects against attacks from anti-radar and cruise missiles, glide bombs, aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles, including those combined into swarms.
