Germany, Taurus cruise missile is being modernized

Koblenz, 19 December 2024 – The modular standoff weapon, or MAW for short, with the designation “TAURUS KEPD-350” was developed in the early 2000s, has been in use by the Bundeswehr since 2005 and is still one of the most modern missiles in the Air Force. In order to maintain the operational capability of the system, the Bundeswehr’s TAURUS inventory is now to be modernized.

To this end, the Bundeswehr Procurement Office today signed a framework agreement for the second major overhaul from 2025 in order to initiate the necessary measures for so-called capability maintenance at an early stage.

TAURUS stands for “Target Adaptive Unitary and Dispenser Robotic Ubiquity System” and is a guided missile that is around five meters long and weighs almost 1,400 kilograms and is equipped with its own engine and mission planning system.

TAURUS is designed to attack strategically important targets over long distances. This means that pilots do not have to enter enemy airspace to fire the missile. The weapon system can currently be used with the Tornado fighter aircraft. Preparations are currently underway for use with the Eurofighter.
