Germany: the Bundeswehr receives deployable data centers

Koblenz, 19 December 2024 – With the “German Mission Network Block 1” (GMN 1) project, the Bundeswehr receives deployable, modular and scalable data centers. These provide multinational, interoperable IT services in the operational areas and thus extend the IT services from the stationary data centers in Germany to the operational areas. These data centers form a logical unit together with the stationary bases in the country. They enable the immediate exchange of information within the armed forces and with NATO partners.

To this end, the Bundeswehr procurement office today concluded a contract with BWI GmbH. In addition to the provision of the relocatable data centers, the contract includes their connection to the stationary data centers, test and training facilities as well as the expansion of the capacities of the stationary data centers in Germany (domestic basis). The project is financed from the Bundeswehr’s special fund and was approved yesterday by the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag.

GMN 1 represents an extremely important, system-relevant component in the end-to-end chain to integrate the armed forces into a consistently digitalized, state-of-the-art system network. The IT infrastructure to be built with GMN 1 is a core piece for the successful execution of military operations by the Bundeswehr on the digitalized battlefield of today and tomorrow. These new digital capabilities are of considerable importance for the Bundeswehr’s defense capability.
