Meprolight MMX3/MMX4 become common equipment for Military and Police forces in Gaza
A niche product until one year ago, the MMX3/MMX4 micro magnifiers developed by Meprolight, the Israeli company specialised in small arms sight and part of the SK Group, are becoming increasingly popular in Israeli military and law enforcement unit as they provide operators with a selective sight when needed.
It is the need that dictates the market! The necessity to improve firing accuracy in current scenarios while maintaining close quarter battle capacity makes the red dot/magnifier solution. “In the initial phase of the operation in Gaza only Special Forces units were equipped with magnifiers, which gave them an edge over other units,” Golan Kalimi, SVP Marketing at Meprolight, tells EDR On-Line. The war made the military and police forces aware of the importance of such an attachment, which comes at reasonable cost not only economically but also as a burden for the soldier. Size Weight and Power is always an issue when dealing with equipment for dismounted infantry, and Meprolight managed to reduce the mass of the magnifier under 200 grams, respectively 177 and 199 grams (269 and 290 grams with the mount), which at first glance put them at the lower end of their category. The MMX3 is 70.6 mm long while the MMX4 length is 82 mm, their compactness allowing to “use” only a small part of the Picatinny rail, leaving place for other accessories; their respective objective diameter is 18 and 24 mm while both have an exit pupil of 6 mm, a field of view of 7.2° and 5.5°, and an eye relief of 67.5 mm.
To install the magnifier on the Picatinny rail the quick release lever on the left must be opened, the MMX3/MMX4 attached on the right sight and rotated; the 7 mm wrench provided in the kit is used to loosen the adaptor nut, then the lever is closed, and the nut is tightened until the system is firmly fixed to the rail. Now the MMX3/MMX4 can be easily removed and installed when needed. At the rear a diopter ring allows adjusting the magnifier to the shooter’s sight, on a ± 2.0 diopter range.
First installation also requires positioning the red dot of the main optic at the centre of the field of view, which is done easily using the elevation and windage screws present on the right and top of the MMX3/MMX4, travel range being over 60 MOA.
At this point the soldier is ready to operate; when the scenario requires longer range shots, he will keep the MMX3/MMX4 magnifier in position, should he transition in a close quarter battle situation he flips it on the side, a firm push being enough to rotate it without any button to be pushed.
To ensure maximum adaptability to all red dot sights a height spacer is provided in the kit, which allows to make the MMX3/MMX4 compatible with optics with respectively between 39 mm to 49 mm height over bore. The flip-on mount can be reversed; as standard it is provided for right-handed personnel, the magnifier flipping on the right side, but it can be easily reverted flipping on the other side for left-handed soldiers. Not only, as camouflage is also an issue, Meprolight provides in the MMX kit two rubber protective covers, one black and one flat dark earth. To fit the height spacer and to change the protective cover the user must separate the magnifier from the mount, which is done using the 3 mm Allen key provided with the magnifier kit.
Meprolight is obviously proposing its MMX3/MMX4 to work in tandem with its red dot sights, Mepro M22, Mepro M21, Mepro MOR PRO, Mepro M5 and Mepro O2, however the new micro magnifiers of the Israeli company are fully compatible with all optics of that type available on the market. The MMX3/MMX4 solution is not limited to assault rifles. “An Israeli unit used to employ a x4 sight of foreign origin, but now reverted to our solution coupling an Mepro M5 with the MMX4 due not only to cost reasons but also to availability, as time from orders has increased dramatically for many defence items,” Golan Kalimi tells EDR On-Line. The company VP Marketing underlines that the best seller is the MMX3, which allows increasing assault rifles accurate fire from 100-150 to 300-350 metres. As said, in Israel both military and police forces are putting massive orders for Meprolight magnifiers, which required the company to reorganise its production line. “We used to produce some thousand pieces per year, but we had to increase production by 10 to cope with requests,” Golan Kalimi concludes.
