FSAF-PAAMS SAMP/T NG System: Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) of First Radar KRONOS GM HP successfully completed

8 September 2023 – Within the framework of the FSAF-PAAMS Programme, the SAMP/T NG system for Italian customers integrates the new GM HP radar produced by Leonardo. This new C-band radar is a high performance multifunctional sensor, designed to contrast any type of air and missile threat simultaneously guaranteeing high tactical mobility and quick strategic deployment.

The KRONOS GM HP radar exploits the horizontal and vertical beam steering capability of its Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) antenna to optimize detection, tracking, threat classification and missile guidance against multiple targets. Combined antenna management and signal processing provide for high probability detection and tracking precision even in heavy clutter. The capability to irradiate a higher power guaranteed by the employment of new high efficiency GaN (Gallium Nitride) components in the antenna TRMs (Transmit and Receive Modules) allow a defence range over 250 KM.

OCCAR awarded the production contract to EUROSAM in December 2021 to ensure the future integration in the SAMP/T NG sections that will be delivered at beginning of 2026. The Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) of the Kronos GM HP K1 radar (first of production for SAMPT NG) have been performed in the presence of OCCAR experts at the LDO premises in Fusaro / Arco Felice, achieving fully satisfactory results (of particular note is that no waivers were recorded). The FAT activities started with the Test Readiness Review (TRR) performed on July 25, 2023 at the Leonardo Fusaro premises.

In the last few days, a considerable number of tests have been performed at the Leonardo Arco Felice site to test all the features and related performances (e.g. range coverage, IFF modes, ECCM resilience, ABT – TBM dual mode, EMCOM sectors, etc.) of the Kronos radar.

OCCAR as SAMPT NG Contracting Authority and EUROSAM as industrial customer congratulate the Leonardo team for an outstanding job and express their full satisfaction for the global result of this FAT that provide the first radar of new generation for SAMPT NG system in accordance with the initial deliveries schedule.
